Madrid is both Spain’s financial and political core, and is home to the Cortes, Senate and Royal Family. It also boasts the extraordinary cultural riches of the “Golden Triangle” – the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza art museums.
It’s population of just shy of three million people makes Madrid Europe’s fourth largest city – after London, Paris and Milan. It is also Europe’s highest capital, at 650m above sea level.
The people of Madrid pride themselves in living a lifestyle of vivir a tope. This strong desire, in combination with the staggering 2800 hours of annual sunshine make Madrid the perfect location for its bustling centers of public display.
The city is famous worldwide for it’s fabulous fiestas, especially those at the end of the year when each barrio tries to outdo the other in its celebrations. However some have a more religious note, such as the Reyes Magos, Carnival, the religious processions of Holy Week, the San Isidro festival in May (the beginning of the bullfighting season) as well as the world celebrated Nochevieja, when the Puerta del Sol becomes the focal point during several hours of uninhibited partying.
